Recently, Professor Martin Bergö, Vice President of Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, led a delegation to visit Qilu Hospital of Shandong University. The delegation was warmly received by Professor Cheng Yufeng, Vice President of Qilu Hospital, and representatives from various departments, including the Office of Scientific Research and International Affairs at Cheeloo College of Medicine, as well as the Department of Human Resources, Department of Science and Technology Management, and Department of International Affairs of Qilu Hospital.
During the meeting, Professor Cheng Yufeng provided an overview of Qilu Hospital’s history, current development, and future plans, with a particular emphasis on the achievements in the construction of the National Medical Center. He also highlighted the fruitful outcomes of the long-standing collaboration between Qilu Hospital and Karolinska Institutet in talent development and scientific research. Professor Cheng expressed his hope that the two institutions would leverage their existing cooperative projects to further enhance complementary strengths, promote multidisciplinary and multi-form collaborations, and achieve greater breakthroughs in innovative interactions and practical cooperation. He emphasized the importance of jointly addressing new challenges in global healthcare and scientific innovation.
Professor Martin Bergö expressed his delight at revisiting Qilu Hospital, a leading medical institution in China, as an old friend. He congratulated Qilu Hospital on its remarkable achievements in medical care, education, and research in recent years. Professor Bergö noted that Qilu Hospital is a key partner of Karolinska Institutet, and the collaboration has already yielded significant results. He highlighted the joint postdoctoral exchange program launched in June 2024, which has strengthened the internationalization of postdoctoral training and fostered the development of young talents. Professor Bergö expressed his hope that this program would serve as a new starting point for deeper cooperation, innovative collaboration models, and closer exchanges in more fields, propelling both institutions to new heights in international medical, educational, and research partnerships.
During the meeting, both sides discussed in detail a groundbreaking collaboration plan to introduce young experts from Karolinska Institutet to work at Qilu Hospital, reaching a preliminary agreement on the implementation of the initiative. Additionally, the two parties engaged in in-depth discussions on clinical data sharing, postdoctoral exchange programs, the standardization of ethical approval processes for research, etc., laying the groundwork for future collaborative plans.
At the subsequent Qilu Academic Forum, Professor Martin Bergö delivered a keynote lecture titled “Antioxidants Accelerate Cancer Metastasis,” presenting groundbreaking research on the role of antioxidants in accelerating cancer metastasis. His findings revealed that antioxidants such as vitamin E and β-carotene may actually promote the progression and metastasis of lung cancer and malignant melanoma. This discovery not only provides a potential explanation for the conflicting results of antioxidants in clinical trials but also offers new therapeutic insights for preventing lung cancer metastasis. Challenging conventional views, this research represents a significant advancement in understanding the relationship between antioxidants and cancer progression, providing new guidance for nutritional management in clinical cancer treatment. In his opening remarks, Professor Cheng Yufeng praised Professor Bergö as a world-renowned expert in molecular medicine, whose pioneering work in cancer biology, aging-related diseases, and inflammatory diseases has earned him widespread acclaim in the academic community. Professor Cheng encouraged hospital staff to seize this opportunity to learn from world-class academic advancements and research approaches, thereby driving new momentum for scientific innovation.
At the Qilu Hospital Young Scholars Symposium, Professor Bergö expressed his enthusiasm for engaging with the hospital’s young researchers and looked forward to establishing more collaborations with Qilu Hospital scholars. He emphasized Karolinska Institutet’s commitment to facilitating scientific cooperation between the two institutions. The symposium featured presentations by several Qilu Hospital researchers, including Dr. Song Kun (Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology), Dr. Hou Yu (Department of Hematology), Dr. Wang Jiali (Department of Emergency Medicine), Dr. Han Mingzhi (Department of Neurosurgery), Dr. Wang Lianlei (Department of Orthopedics), Professor Wang Shuangxi (Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Remodeling and Function Research), and Dr. Liu Fuchen (Department of Neurology).
Following the meetings, the delegation toured Qilu Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine, EICU wards, neurosurgery laboratory, and cancer center, engaging in further discussions with personnel of relevant departments and research platforms.
Professor Martin Bergö, currently Vice President and Chair of the Research Committee at Karolinska Institutet, is a globally renowned expert in molecular medicine. His research focuses on CAAX proteins, with significant discoveries in cancer progression and potential therapies for Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS). With over two decades of collaboration with Qilu Hospital, Professor Bergö has visited our hospital multiple times and was appointed as a Visiting Professor of Shandong University in April 2006. Since assuming the role of Vice President at Karolinska Institutet in 2023, he has been actively promoting deeper institutional collaboration between the two hospitals. In November 2024, upon the recommendation of Qilu Hospital, Professor Bergö was honored as an Honorary Professor of Shandong University, with the certificate presented by Professor Ren Youqun, Chairman of the Council of Shandong University, during the centennial celebration of the Qilu Medical College Alumni Gate.
